Ceramic veneers abroad: smile design, visits and timeline

En este artículo

Considering ceramic veneers abroad usually brings two questions together: will the smile suit me, and how much time do I need to spend away from home?

At CHC Clínica Dental in Barcelona, Spain, we begin online and plan the treatment around a proper examination, a smile preview and your approval. For a straightforward case, the proposed pathway is two trips: approximately three days for the first stay, followed by a second stay with up to one week reserved for fitting and any adjustments. Between them, allow around one week for the laboratory to make the veneers.

This two-trip plan includes tooth preparation and final scans during the first stay. If that stage cannot be completed then, the trip length or number of visits changes. Your confirmed timetable comes after assessment.

Your veneers treatment timeline

  1. 01 · Before travelling · online

Meet your dentist and discuss options

Share existing photographs and an OPG if you have one. We discuss your goals and possible treatments, then provide a preliminary estimate. The final budget follows your examination at CHC.

  2. 02 · Trip one · approximately three days

    Assessment, smile preview and preparation

We examine your teeth and gums, take scans and bite records, and develop the design. When suitable, you try a mock-up in your mouth. After approving the plan and design, preparation and final scans are arranged within this stay.

  3. 03 · Between trips · around one laboratory week

    Your ceramic veneers are made

The laboratory works from the approved design and final preparation records. This week starts once the laboratory has the complete records—not from your first online call. Temporary restorations are used when needed.

  4. 04 · Trip two · reserve up to one week

    Try-in, refinements and bonding

If you approve the appearance and we confirm the fit and bite, bonding may take place at the first fitting appointment. Minor laboratory refinements may take another one or two days; more substantial changes can take longer.

  5. 05 · After fitting · planned follow-up

Check comfort and keep in touch

We arrange the appropriate review and explain daily care. Return travel should allow for checks or adjustments, and your ongoing maintenance continues at home.

The second week is a practical allowance, not a promise that every case will be finished within seven days. You may be ready to leave sooner if everything is satisfactory, but flexible tickets and extendable accommodation give you room for changes.

Start online: your goals, options and an initial estimate

Our first consultation for this international pathway is online. Tell us what you would like to change: the colour, length, shape or proportions of your teeth, small spaces, or the way your smile looks as a whole. We also ask about your dental history, health, medication and any symptoms.

If you have an OPG—a panoramic dental X-ray—it can be helpful to share it with existing photographs before the call. We will explain how to send your records. An OPG provides an overview; it cannot establish every detail of tooth or gum health or replace the examination. Please contact us before arranging a new X-ray. Any additional imaging should be selected for your clinical needs.

At this stage we discuss possible approaches and provide an estimated budget, not the final budget. The final treatment plan and budget are confirmed only after you attend the clinic and we complete the necessary assessment. Any additional treatment is explained before you decide to proceed.

Are ceramic veneers the right option?

Ceramic veneers, often called porcelain veneers, are custom-made coverings bonded to suitable teeth to change their appearance. They are different from crowns, which cover more of the tooth. Your plan should identify what each tooth needs rather than giving every tooth the same treatment.

Depending on your goals, the alternatives may include:

  • Whitening when the main concern is the colour of otherwise suitable teeth.
  • Composite bonding for selected changes to shape or small defects.
  • Orthodontics when changing tooth positions is a more appropriate starting point.
  • No treatment or a smaller treatment plan if the expected benefit does not justify changing healthy teeth.

We discuss these options within our aesthetic dentistry assessment (Spanish). We do not decide how many veneers you need from a photograph alone.

Trip one: assessment, digital wax-up and an in-mouth mock-up

The first stay is planned for approximately three days in a straightforward, coordinated case. It includes several stages, rather than three days spent continuously in the dental chair.

Examination and records

We assess the teeth, existing restorations, gums, bite and smile. Scans, photographs and bite records help us plan the shape and position of the proposed restorations. We confirm the final budget and explain any treatment needed before veneers can be made.

Digital wax-up: the proposed design

A digital wax-up is a computer design of the proposed tooth shapes. We use it to discuss length, proportions and how the teeth work together in your smile. You can tell us what feels right to you and what you would like to reconsider.

Mock-up: previewing the design in your mouth

When the clinical conditions permit, we transfer the proposed shape into your mouth with a temporary trial material. This is the mock-up. It lets you assess the overall appearance and discuss the feel, speech and tooth length before committing to the proposed preparation.

The mock-up is a preview, not the final ceramic. Its colour, translucency, thickness and surface finish may differ from the finished veneers, and not every design can be reproduced accurately over the existing teeth without preparation. We explain these limitations before asking for your approval.

After approval: tooth preparation and final scans

Once the diagnosis, budget and design are agreed, we arrange the preparation and scanning appointments, usually over the remaining one or two days of the first stay when the case permits. Tooth preparation means carefully shaping the areas that need space for the ceramic; it is not automatically the same amount on every tooth.

Our aim is to preserve appropriate tooth structure. Some cases need very little preparation, while others need more. Enamel that is removed does not grow back, so “minimal preparation” should never be presented as automatically reversible treatment.

The laboratory receives the final preparation records, the agreed design and the information needed to make the veneers. If you need more time to decide or a new design is required, preparation is postponed and we revise the travel plan.

The laboratory week: will I need temporary veneers?

Allow around one week of laboratory production after the complete preparation records are ready. The actual fitting date is confirmed with the clinic; weekends, holidays, case complexity or a revised design can affect it.

In selected cases with very minimal preparation, it may be appropriate to wait without temporary veneers. This is decided after checking the prepared teeth, comfort, appearance and need for protection. Minimal preparation alone does not automatically mean temporaries are unnecessary.

When the preparation or clinical circumstances call for protection, we provide temporary restorations and explain how to look after them. If you return home between trips, we also discuss what to do if a temporary becomes loose or uncomfortable. Contact us rather than trying to glue it back yourself.

Trip two: try-in, approval and bonding

At the fitting appointment we try the ceramic veneers in place and assess their appearance with you. We check the fit, contacts and bite, as well as whether the conditions are suitable for bonding.

If you are happy and the clinical checks are satisfactory, try-in and bonding can take place on the same day. Your approval matters, but fit and function must also be right.

If changes are needed, we explain whether they can be made at the clinic or require laboratory work. Selected minor laboratory adjustments may be possible within one or two days. A change of design, shade or a remake can take longer and may extend the stay beyond a week or require a further visit.

For that reason, we recommend reserving a week for this second trip, or arranging changeable tickets and accommodation that can be extended. Do not base your return flight on an assumption that the first try-in will always be the final appointment.

What if I need fillings, gum treatment or an implant?

Veneers are planned around oral health. We discuss any extra treatment, its cost and its effect on the schedule before starting.

  • Tooth decay: suitable fillings or other necessary care may be arranged during the first stay. Deeper decay or a tooth needing root canal treatment can change both the restoration and the timetable.
  • Gum problems: cleaning or periodontal treatment may begin during the first visit, but the response needs to be assessed. If gum surgery is indicated, the tissues may need additional healing before final veneer records or bonding.
  • A missing tooth or implant treatment: this follows its own surgical and restorative plan. Selected treatment may be started during the first trip, but implant healing cannot be fitted into a veneer laboratory week simply for convenience.

Some combined cases therefore need additional stages or trips. Our periodontal team (Spanish) and restorative planning work together so the final result is built on suitable teeth and tissues. If an implant is part of your plan, see our guide to implant treatment visits; its full-arch timeline is a separate pathway.

What should the veneers estimate include?

When comparing porcelain veneers in Spain, ask about the number of teeth, proposed ceramic, diagnostic records, design and mock-up, preparation, temporary restorations if needed, laboratory work, fitting and follow-up.

Confirm how additional dental treatment, requested changes or a remake would be handled. Discuss travel and accommodation separately, including possible extensions. The online estimate helps you plan; it is not a substitute for the final in-clinic budget or a guarantee of the number of appointments.

After treatment: looking after your veneers

Before you leave, we explain cleaning and arrange the appropriate review. Tell us if the bite feels uncomfortable or a veneer feels loose. Keep up professional dental checks at home, and contact us if anything changes.

Veneers need maintenance and may eventually need repair or replacement. We also assess grinding or clenching and discuss protection when indicated. Remote calls and photographs can support follow-up, but some concerns require an in-person examination.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see the proposed smile before my teeth are prepared?

We discuss a digital design and, when suitable, provide an in-mouth mock-up. This helps you review the proposed shape and proportions, with the limitations of the trial material explained.

Can I have ceramic veneers abroad in two trips?

That is the proposed pathway for suitable cases when assessment, design approval, preparation and final scans fit into the first stay. If preparation needs another visit, the plan becomes a longer stay or an additional trip.

Does a panoramic X-ray give me a final quote?

No. An existing OPG can help the initial discussion, but the final diagnosis and budget depend on the in-clinic assessment and any further records needed.

Will I definitely need a whole week for the fitting trip?

Not necessarily. Fitting and bonding may be completed on the first day when everything is satisfactory. Reserving a week gives room for reviews and selected adjustments; more substantial changes can take longer.

Can I return home during the laboratory stage?

Often this can be planned, provided the condition of your teeth, any temporaries and the arrangements for help at home make it appropriate. Confirm this with the clinic before booking travel.
